My Intro

HI EVERYONE......
My name is Pranav Reddy. You can call me pranav. I want to share my experiences at gowtham college gudavalli where i studied intermediate..hmmmm...Its the only college(higher secondary school is called as junior college in our place) in andhra pradesh which has got state first ranks in consecutive five years in EAMCET(the dirtiest exam i ve ever faced...unit tests in my school were even better)...one guy even got into top ten in iit... what i say is really true...u can check it out. i remember some rankers too. kks bhaskar, avk swaroop, and some other guys.
I too was tempted by these. Publicity about these ranks wasn't much . There were 54 IIT ranks from one class...one thing i always dreamed was getting into an IIT. so i joined in this gowtham junior college, gudavalli in june 2006

My first day in hostel

I was given accomodation in godavari hostel. A four storeyed building which looked like a palace. That night my dad was about to leave. I looked into his eyes. I think he wanted to say ''study well my dear son''. I guessed it and said that i ll try my best to get into IIT. He smiled and said goodbye. He went away. That was the first time in my life i was going to be away from my parents until home sick holidays which would be given a month later. This thought nearly made my eyes moist. I went to my bed. The guy beside me was fighting with another for a place for his cot under the fan. I didn't know anyone. I was new to that place and so was everyone. But i didn't quite understand the slang of the people in coastal andhra. The way they talk was funny. I crawled into my bed and covered my face with bedsheet. I felt like crying. But i told myself that i had grown up and would never cry. The next moment i was looking for a towel to wipe my tears. A hand kerchief was not enough.

IIT-The most prestegious exam in the country

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), are a group of thirteen autonomous engineering and technology-oriented institutes of higher education established and declared as Institutes of National Importance by the Parliament of India. The IITs were created to train scientists and engineers, with the aim of developing a skilled workforce to support the economic and social development of India after independence in 1947.
The highly competitive examination in the form of IIT-JEE has led to establishment of a large number of coaching institutes throughout the country that provide intensive, and specific preparation for the IIT-JEE for substantial fees. It is argued that this favours students from specific regions and richer backgrounds. Some coaching institutes say that they have individually coached nearly 800 successful candidates year after year. According to some estimates, nearly 95% of all students who clear the IIT-JEE had joined coaching classes. The psychological stress and emotional trauma faced by candidates not able to pass the examination and their families is considered to be a serious problem. This has led to criticism of the way the examinations are conducted. The IIT-JEE format was restructured in 2006 following these complaints.

After the change to the objective pattern of questioning, even the students who initially considered themselves not fit for subjective pattern of IIT-JEE decided to take the examination. Though the restructuring was meant to reduce the dependence of students on coaching classes, it led to an increase in students registering for coaching classes. Some people (mostly IITians) have criticised the changed pattern of the IIT-JEE. Their reasoning is that while IIT-JEE traditionally used to test students understanding of fundamentals and ability to apply them to solve large unseen problems, the current pattern does not stress much on the application part.

And here i m ready to prepare for the most prestegious exam in the country in a premier coaching institute.

In the hospital

The next day i went to Mr.Ajit Agarwal's class. He started vectors. I was attentive for sometime. But soon i got a headache. I couldn't concentrate. After the class i went to clinic. Until then i never knew that clinics or hospitals were so dirty. I went with headache and slept there for a few hours. Then i came back to my room with cough and cold. The next day i got fever due to that. I went to clinic again. There was one guy in a chair with a white coat on. I told him that i had fever. He looked at me seriously...say very seriously as if he was solving an IIT problem. He took out a thermometer and and asked me to keep it under the tongue.
I did . He again said "under your tongue". After sometime he took it out and said ." Your body temp is 101 degrees", he sat silently for sometime thinking something. I was thinking about what I was supposed to do if I have anything like typhoid or something...go back home?...he opened his mouth after a few minutes. He said slowly " You have fever. I ll give u medicine". Then he gave me two crocin tablets. Huh i thought he would tell me something dangerous. I told him that I had them already. Then he took off his coat and said " ok, doctor will come in the evening. You meet him". I was shocked. He wasn't the doctor. I asked him who he was..." anta build up enduku ecchavu ra?" ani andam anipinchindi...he said in an authoritative voice "i m the one and only compound er of this gowtham college".

Change of hostel

And after that day I moved to Sindhu campus, about a mile away from the main campus. I packed my luggage and I went there along with 20 other guys in the college van. I was allotted a room on the 3rd floor. I didn’t know anyone of my roommates. Everything was new to me. Of course, so was it for everyone. Then suddenly I saw a guy who appeared familiar. I went near him. He turned to me and exclaimed “hiiiii pranav . Soo nice to see u here.” . hmmm I saw him somewhere… I was trying to remember. yesss he was in my school in ‘A’ section . I was in ‘B’. I still didn’t remember his name. I just said, “how are u? which room?” . “40”, he replied. And I asked him if there was any room for me . He said that one cot was vacant and I shifted there. Aha at last I found a place in Sindhu campus.

My first interesting Class

The next day, I went to the class. One guy who looked about 35 came into the class when everyone was shouting. He had ray-ban glasses. And they were a little old fashioned though. Never mind all the old fashioned would again comeback as a new fad. His glasses were like the one siddharth used in rang de basanti. He must have come on a bike. He looked dignified and went straight onto the stage. He took the duster into his hand and tapped it hard on the black board. Everybody were on their senses. Class was silent. “Hello students”, he said, “I am your Sanskrit lecturer”. I was a little shocked and so was everyone. A sankrit lecturer???? I thought that Sanskrit lecturers were clad in dhoti or something like that. But here it was different. A Sanskrit lecturer with a formal full sleeved shirt neatly tucked and a wrinkle free trousers. I was waiting for him to start the class. He started. Shouted aloud some poems in Sanskrit which I hadn’t known then or now or never. He then told us that he also knew a little math.. hmmm… can a Sanskrit lecturer teach math???? He then gave us a problem… cant call it a problem though… he proved that 0 and 1 are equal… (i dont remember the proof right now.. i ll blog it in a few days)

And then he disclosed his original identity. He said that his name is ramesh Chandra. And that everyone called him RC.. anyone of gowtham college who studied in 2006 and 2007 surely knows him. And he was a math lecturer. At present he is the head of maths department in FIITJEE Hyderabad campus. He made math interesting. Made us solve problems on black board and even brought out our own ability in solving problems..

Vectors

Two days passed without many happening classes. Then I got fever. A severe one and I had to take rest for a week. Out of college for a week and spent time with my parents. Didn't feel like leaving them. But I had to. Back to college after a week. Missed many classes and that one week surely cost something. I was in the physics class that day. And our lecturer was prasad. We called him PP or potti prasad. I took two days to understand his lingo. A perfect coastal Andhra type. Stretched every word so long that it seemed to me as if it had lost its meaning. But he liked it. After acquainting myself with his lingo I started to concentrate on the lessons.. oops.. what is going on in the class?? I couldn’t figure out exactly. The topic was vectors. The only thing I knew about vectors then, was that vectors have direction. And I knew nothing else. But something more was happening in the class. Shortest route , shortest time, river boat problems, and many many things. The next day I got the assignment given by Mr. Ajit Agarwal. Huh what should I say guys. In it were problems on aircrafts and the directions in which missiles were to be released and even problems dealing with rugby about passing the ball in some direction so that the opponent could not touch it. And many things of that sort. I know you would think that questions are very interesting and anyone would try them. Even I tried. Questions were interesting but answers weren’t. For every question we need to work out at least 5 to 6 steps all entirely new and it is no easy to solve them on your own. We used to take the help of other lecturers though not Mr. Ajit , even the other lecturers found them tough. There was a rumour that ajit can give us any assignment with in an hour. And many said that he just downloads the questions from a physics website into his cell phone and directly connects it to a printer. I too believed them , because the questions were so lengthy and no man could ever set that sort of assignment in a day or two. Anyway I dint have much to do with those questions because I never got them right. So I stopped trying to answer them..
